Poppy Complex, Chapter 5

WARNING!! This chapter contains blood, death, and a slight mention of rape.

"Happy to see me?" He asked as he stood behind Briar and Tristan. Both of them were bound to the dining room chairs, Briar silently looked around, trying to figure out what was going on, and Tristan's breathing was sporatic. I glared at him and took in a breath, ready to scream.

As I did, though, he pointed a gun at Briar's head, "Naughty girl," he laughed, then his face went serious again, "I know what you did."

"What's he talking about?" Briar asked, teeth clenched and eyes closed as he tried not to shake too much, "Who is he?"

"Go on," He strolled towards Tristan, coming to a stop next to him, "Tell him who I am."

I glanced from him, to Tristan, to Briar, then back to the nameless man, "He...he raped me."

Tristan gasped, "It's you! Why are you here? What do you want?!"

"I'm here...because I found out that you know," The nameless man walked back behind them, "And I told her not to tell anyone!"

"How could you possibly--" I started to ask, my voice shaking.

"That girl, the older one, is mine! I know she is," he said angrily as he walked in front of me, stopping once he was behind Briar, "And no boy would willingly say that his best friend's child is his own, without having a damn good reason."

The man pulled a knife out of his pocket, and stabbed Briar in the back. Once, twice, three times. Briar started coughing up blood violently, moaning and crying as the blood gushed. He strolled around him lightly, laughing as he dropped the knife back into his pocket.

"He'll die any second now. Then you'll watch your darling husband die," he laughed again as he watched Briar die.

I wanted to try to escape, but I knew it would do no good. Not unless I could get to a phone and call the police before he killed me. I tried to remember where I had last used my cell phone. I remembered last night, going to bed wondering where I had put it. I retraced my steps, until I remembered calling Tristan, when he was out with the girls and Theia.

Then...then I had fallen asleep where I was...On the couch! The man watched as the light left Briar's eyes, and I wanted to cry, but I knew I couldn't...I needed to find my cell phone.

I fidgeted around, shoving my hands between the pillows, trying to find the phone. I found the phone just as he turned towards me.

"What's going on?" Tristan cried.

"Nothing much, really," the man said lightly, as though he was hanging with friends, "Don't worry. Your wife is having a lovely time trying to escape. She won't, though. Sorry."

"You asshole!" Tristan screamed, "Let her go!"

The man laughed, setting the gun in his pocket and pulling the knife out. He quickly spun around, stabbing Tristan through the chest, right through the heart. He made a choking noise before laying limp in his chair. God, Oh, God...this is all my faoult! Why did I get him involved? He died because of me. The only two men I've ever trusted and dead, because of me.

"Damn," The man said, eyes on Tristan, "That went quickly. I had hoped that he'd last longer, but he just got so annoying with all those questions and blah blah blah."

He walked in slow circles around Briar and Tristan's bodies. I fumbled with the phone, frantically trying to figure out which key was which. It shouldn't be this hard...it isn't that difficult...

"I guess I can tell you all about what I'm going to do when your kids get back, since we have all this extra time!" He leaned beside me.

9...

I couldn't find the one key, I was trying, but I had started shaking and my eyes were blurring with tears.

"Now, I haven't quite decided what to do with the blind girl. I could use her, but if she's as bothersome as that father of hers, I'll just kill her. But my girl, oh, she'll be fun!"

He let out a maniacal laugh. I closed my eyes and tried to breathe...I had to calm down, I had to find it...I tried to stay calm, keeping a blank face as I slowly felt the keys and tried to decipher which one was which.

"She's going to kill you, first off. That way, she'll be mine. She can't really run away, if I could turn her in for murder," he laughed again. I started crying more. I knew she wouldn't kill me, she was much too good for that, but the idea of him forcing her to do things like that... "Then, I'm going to take her with me."

I somehow found the 1 key and pressed it twice.

"I'm going to have my lovely daughter marry a rich man, and then I'm going to help her kill him and make it look like an accident. And then we're going to take the money and find another rich man," I pressed the talk button as he spoke, "The other girl, though, if I keep her alive, she's going to be even more fun. I'm going to f..."

I pressed the speaker button as the phone started dialing.

"What is that?" he asked of the dial tone.

"9-1-1, where is your emergency?" The operator said.

"You dirty little bitch!" He growled, standing up slowly. He turned around and started pulling out his hair, I yelled my address quickly as he turned around and glared at me, "I was hoping to have your daughter shoot you, but I guess that I'll have to do it instead..."

"The police are on their way," The woman on the other end of the line said urgently.

I felt the pain in my chest before I heard the gun go off.
